Oh how I love Jesus
Oh how I love Jesus
Oh how I love Jesus
Because He first loved me
Frederick Whitfield, who lived from 1829-1904, penned the words to this beautiful song. “Oh How I Love Jesus” became a favorite during the evangelistic ministry of D.L. Moody. Over the years, this song has touched many lives and is commonly heard in many churches to this day. But what is amazing is not the story or author of the song, but the words that tug at our hearts and give glory to the name of Jesus.
This song does not amaze us with big, complex words or intense rhymes, but because of the simple message it displays from I John 4:19. I John 4:19 says, “We love him, because he first loved us.” We willingly serve Him because He loved us enough to serve us first. We give our lives for Him because He loved us enough to die for us first. Everything we do to serve Him is because He loved us enough to give His life for us.
We cannot repay the many blessings He has given. We cannot out give or out love God. The sacrifice He gave is too great. The price He paid is too much for us to repay. This is why we praise Him. This is why we love Him. Not because we are anything special or spectacular, but because He is great and He loved us enough to make us something special. We are not worthy to receive any glory; we are what we are because of Jesus.
When you hear “Oh How I Love Jesus” again, I encourage you to remember that God loved you enough to give His life for you. You are something special because of the sacrifice He made, not because of anything you have done. We don’t deserve all the blessings He gives us, but He gives it to us anyways. We love Him because He loved us first.
